“The pharmacological effects of peyote had already been studied by several researchers. Pioneers of this research include Havelock Ellis5 and Wier Mitchell.6 More systematic experiments were conducted by Lewin7 and by Beringer8 in Germany, and by Rouhier9 in France. Descriptions of a literary nature followed, among them those of Aldous Huxley10 and Henri Michaux11 are particularly well known. We remind readers that Western experimenters noted, in the effects of peyote and mescaline, the following characteristics:

1  For the Western experimenter, it is above all an aesthetic spectacle, generally individual. It is a phantasmagoria of forms, light, colour, and movement that fascinates by its incomparable beauty.

2  These are, strictly speaking, not hallucinations but “pseudo-hallucinations,” that is, the subject remains perfectly aware that his hallucinations are unreal.

3  These hallucinations are very mobile; they are intermittent and unpredictable. Part of their charm stems from this element of constant surprise.

If we now look at the visions of the Indians, we note that they differ point by point from the preceding characteristics:

1  For them, it is basically a religious experience. The aesthetic element is not absent, but is subordinate to it. The experience begins with a deep sense of veneration and the believer comes out spiritually enriched. For the same reason, it has a communal character and reinforces ties among the individuals.

2  Unlike Europeans and North Americans, the Indian is persuaded that his visions are real; it is the divinity itself who appears through them.

3  The visions are not intermittent, but as they are mobile, they present a kind of temporal organization, in the way of a narrative or a drama.

When mescaline is administered by Freudians; infantile experiences.

When mescaline is administered by Jungians; transcendent experiences.

When mescaline is administered Harvard students; philosophical problems (determinism, freedom, problem of evil).

The experience is not14 an artificial psychosis.”
